Start Here: New to RC Helis?
1. Fly a simulator first. Hours in a free/cheap sim (see Simulators below) build stick muscle memory without the cost of crashes. Most pilots recommend at least several hours of sim hovering before touching a real heli.

2. Learn a few key terms. BNF (Bind-N-Fly — needs your own radio), RTF (Ready-To-Fly — radio included), CP (Collective Pitch — blades can go negative pitch, required for 3D), flybarless (electronic stabilization, standard on modern micros), ELRS (ExpressLRS, a popular open-source radio link protocol), expo/rates (how sensitive your sticks feel).

3. Pick your first heli and radio. See Getting Started below for beginner-friendly micro helis (Goosky S1/S2, OMP M1/M2) and radios (RadioMaster Zorro/Boxer).

4. Find a local club or an experienced buddy. Flying near someone who already knows the hobby is the fastest way to avoid bad habits and crashes — try the AMA Club Finder or ask around on r/RCHeli or HeliFreak. Most clubs require AMA membership, which is worth getting anyway — it includes liability insurance that covers you if your heli damages property or injures someone.

5. Know the FAA rules — they're mandatory, not optional. Nearly every heli on this page weighs 250g or more, which means federal law requires you to register it with FAADroneZone and pass TRUST (the Recreational UAS Safety Test — free, open-book, untimed, and never expires) before you fly, and to carry proof of both. Remote ID also applies to many models, with some nuances for community-run FRIA sites — see the FAA's recreational flyers page for current requirements rather than relying on a summary here.

6. A few safety basics before your first flight: keep hands and faces clear of spinning blades, never charge or store LiPo batteries unattended (use a fireproof bag/box), always fly with a spotter if you're near other people, set up a throttle-cut/failsafe on your radio before you fly, and skip flying if it's windy — most micros only handle a light breeze comfortably, and a calm morning beats fighting gusts every time.

7. Set expectations. A first BNF micro heli + battery + charger runs roughly $150–400 (add a radio if it's not RTF); most micros fly 5–10 minutes per charge. Comfortable hovering usually takes a few weeks of regular sim + real practice — that's normal, not a sign you're doing it wrong.

You will crash — that's normal. Once your gear is bound and set up (see First Flight below), work through the Level 1 checklist and track your progress as you go.
Getting Started: Gear & Simulators
Sim time is the highest-leverage thing a beginner can do — hours in a simulator translate directly to fewer crashes and faster progress once you're flying for real. Most radios need a USB dongle or trainer cable to talk to sim software (many EdgeTX radios can also plug in directly and act as a USB joystick) — check your radio and sim's compatibility before buying either. Buy a spare set of main and tail blades (and a canopy) with your first heli — you will crash while learning, and having parts on hand means a broken blade ends a flight, not your whole session. First Flight: Setup & Binding Checklist
1. Inspect before every flight. Check main and tail blades, linkages, and screws for damage or looseness. Fully charge your battery and inspect it for puffing or damage.

2. Bind your radio to the receiver. Exact steps vary by heli and radio protocol (S-FHSS, ELRS, DSMX, etc.) — follow your heli's manual precisely. BNF models need a receiver/protocol that matches your transmitter; some combos need an adapter cable, so double-check compatibility before buying.

3. Set up failsafe and throttle hold. Configure your radio so the motor cuts if signal is lost, and assign a throttle hold switch you can hit instantly in an emergency.

4. Verify control directions on the bench. With blades off (or very low throttle only), confirm cyclic, collective, and tail respond in the correct direction before you ever add power in the air.

5. Level the swashplate and check sub-trim. Follow your heli's manual for swash-leveling and default sub-trim/servo settings — most micros ship with a tool or app for this.

6. First spool-up, then first hover. Do a low-throttle spool-up test on the ground, away from your body, and confirm the tail holds heading. For your first real hover, fly low over soft grass or a mat, stay centered, and be ready to cut throttle at any moment.
Troubleshooting: Common Beginner Issues
Heli drifts sideways or won't hold a spot. Usually stick input (yours), not the heli — expo/rates can help, but drift is mostly cured by sim time and small, gentle corrections instead of big stick movements. If it drifts the same direction every time, check trim.

Tail wags or "hunts" back and forth. Often a gyro/tail gain setting that's too high or too low, or a loose tail linkage/tail motor mount — check for slop in the tail linkage first, then try adjusting tail gain per your heli's manual.

Heli vibrates a lot. Check for damaged, unbalanced, or improperly seated main blades, a loose main shaft, or a warped/loose canopy touching the frame.

Won't spool up, or motor cuts out. Check for a triggered failsafe or throttle hold, a low or damaged battery, a loose motor connector, or a bound ESC — reboot the radio and receiver and re-check binding if it persists.

Radio won't bind. Confirm the radio protocol matches the receiver (e.g. ELRS vs. S-FHSS vs. DSMX), that you're within range and not near Wi-Fi/other 2.4GHz interference, and that you're following the exact bind sequence (often power-on order matters) in your heli's manual.
